Overview A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection uses encryption to protect data and prevent others from listening-in on the data that is transferred between your computer and the campus network. UBC Information Technology offers free VPN services to UBC students, faculty, and staff at both the Vancouver and Okanagan campus. The PHAS VPN is just a subset of the UBC VPN. UBC IT provides the department with a range of IP addresses which are reserved for people with a CWL role of ca.ubc.service.vpn.phas.users . If you connect to a PHAS service with one of these IPs, the server knows that you are a trusted "phas person". CWL accounts are available to registered UBC students, staff and faculty. If none of these affiliations reflect your status with the university and you need VPN access, you can obtain a CWL guest account if you are sponsored by a staff member or faculty. Once you have your CWL account, you can configure your computer for myVPN service. The University of British Columbia offers a VPN service (myvpn.ubc.ca), that secures communication for remote users and offers access to sensitive areas within the local network at the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. When connected using myvpn, local network devices such as file shares can become inaccessible.

The self-service application requires that all faculty and staff use the VPN service when connecting to the UBC network from a non-campus site or when using wireless. UBC offers two VPN services – VPN Vancouver and VPN Okanagan. The VPN service used will be based on campus location and the type of service you wish to access.
